I was approached by Steven C Wilson, compiler of the boxset, who knew me and my work from the Cambridge music scene. He was keen on a retro-style psychedelic look for the box, inspired in part by Chris Achilléos’ early 1970s work for Target Books.
I came up with a colour palette that could be carried through the set to colour code the discs and their tracklist information, to make the set easy to navigate. Each disc had its own over illustration, inspired with motifs drawn from the lyric content of some of the songs. The outside box art incorporated elements from the individual disc covers.
Along the way, the scope of the set expanded from three to five discs, one of which was enhancement/recreation of original album cover art.
It was fantastic to be able to work on this, as it’s music that I love (and a record label I’ve long been a fan of) , and psychedelia is a fun style to do.
